Confession? I have never been to Dubai, till now that is. Dubai is like the Middle East’s version of Las Vegas. Somewhere you go to spend your money, live lavish, enjoy yourself, forget yourself and pretty much go into full vacation mode while there. No limits seems to be the rule in Dubai and the bigger the better. Even thou Dubai is an Islamic country that is easily forgotten with malls and nightclubs outnumbering mosques. Abayas are scarce and shorts are common. Dubai has done a terrific job at appealing to foreign visitors, making almost anything attainable in the country; it caters to all.
That being said it is a lot to take in and has so much to offer that going once would never be enough. If you’re into very modern metropolitan cities than Dubai is a place you want to visit. It literally caters to tourists and getting around is a breeze. With franchises, chain hotels and designer brands pouring into the country it has transformed Dubai into a fast growing commercial hub. Dubai is like the mashup between L.A (for their obsession with aesthetics and need to drive everywhere), NY (for their ever-growing business portfolios) and Miami ( for their landscape and climate).
However if you’re looking for a more culturally rich traditional vacation ( or just cooler) than this is not the place to be. I found even their traditional Dubai area was modernized so it would appeal to tourists. Many of the traditions, ancient infrastructure and customs have been pushed a side for modernization. The old souqs have been transformed to air-conditioned strip malls (don’t mind the A.C) with strong rules enforcing the banishing of haggling.
Anyhow love it or hate it, Dubai has a lot to offer and here is a sneak peek into our Days in Dubai….
