I’ve mentioned our love for Asian food a few times here on the blog and even thou we try anything and everything, only some places are truly blog worthy. The next spotlighted Asian restaurant found here in Jeddah has to be PANJAN ASIAN Restaurant. Not only is it located in one of my favorite dining scenes (THE COURTYARD) in town but the food and service was excellent.

After debating the menu we finally settled on a few dishes we could finally agree on. The order had us impressed everything served seemed to get better and better.

Your first invitation in Saudi Arabia will most likely involve this dish. Kabsa is the traditional dish here in Saudi Arabia. It is a rice-based dish served with a large portion of meat (chicken, camel, beef, lamb). The dish is consumed daily and is can be found at many of the local eateries. The special thing about this rice/meat dish is the way it is cooked and the spices used. The distinct taste can be credited to the mixed use of saffron, cinnamon, cardamom, black lime, black pepper, cloves and  nutmeg. Kabsa can be prepared in different ways most commonly a combination of stovetop and
oven but the most traditional form is the use of an underground BBQ pit.
Kabsa can be found all over the Middle East under different names and slight differences in the use of spices. What is always similar is that rice and animal meat are involved. When ordering Kabsa please
keep in mind that it is served in large portions and one serving is often enough for 3 people.

Just because I’m living in the Middle East doesn’t mean I can get good quality Middle Eastern food all the time. In fact it’s harder to come by these days, with so many commercial restaurant chains taking over the dining scene in Saudi Arabia. One place that seems to always get it right in my opinion is CUISINE HALAWANI. I’ve been several times in the past and on my last visit I realized I haven’t reviewed it on the blog yet. So here, it is. Read more

Durrat China Restaurant

My first experience with Chinese dining in the KSA came in the form of a visit to the popular restaurant Durrat China. The restaurant is nestled between a hub of cafes and eateries but the restaurant’s decor is a sure stand out. The opulent red and gold decor is nothing compared to the massive chandeliers lining the ceiling walls. The restaurants family section is splendid, the enclosed dining spaces are large and spacious consisting of large round tables surrounded by seating booths and chairs. Very comfy and would be a lovely dining experience for a large party.
